Scientists have finally found clitoris on female snakes. Until recently, little was known about the female snake’s genitalia. In fact, the little research that has gone into the study of female snakes’ genitalia has led scientists to believe that they do not have clitorises.Â
Most scientists focused on conducting research on male snakes. Therefore, they found that male snakes have penises. They then believed that forceful methods were mostly employed by male snakes to reproduce baby snakes.Â

New Findings About Female Snakes’ Clitorises:
Curious Megan Folwell decided to research into the genitalia of female snakes. To her, it simply didn’t make sense that snakes would lack the clitoris, which is present in all mammals, all lizards, and some birds.
To satisfy her curiosity, she then began examining female snake specimens from the University of Michigan’s zoology collection to see if she could locate it. Lo and behold, Flowell did. The triangular structure of the hemiclitoris, a two-part clitoris also seen in lizards, was shockingly found after she removed the skin of a death adder (A poisonous snake). The organ in question was concealed beneath the skin of the tail.
For the first time, a research led by Megan Folwell,  PhD student at the university of Adelaide located and described the hemiclitores (Two individual clitorises) of nine snake species in a recent study that was published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Folwell, claimed the major taboo around research into female genitalia may have prevented snake clitorises from being discovered and reported earlier. The study revealed that the organ was rather misidentified as scent glands or immature penises.
According to the recent research findings, the Guatemalan milk snake had a relatively smaller hemiclitores than that of the cantil viper, which had the largest being 1.2 inches long and 0.7 inches wide. This shows that the organs are important for mating, but more investigation is required to ascertain their precise role. The study suggests that, hemiclitores are comparable to mammalian clitoris in that, they include erectile tissue and nerve bundles that may indicate tactile sensitivity.
