Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96, Buckingham Palace announces

Queen Elizabeth II has died at 96, Buckingham Palace has announced.

On Thursday, that is today, the queen passed away as members of her immediate family, including her son and heir, Prince Charles, raced to be by her side.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the statement read. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Upon the announcement, Prince Charles, the former Prince of Wales, has immediately become king. His son Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, will inherit his title. However, Charles won’t be given his given name until Friday, the day following the monarch’s passing.

The queen had a number of health setbacks in her final months. The confirmation that she had tested positive for COVID-19 came from Buckingham Palace in February. The following week, the monarch was put on “light responsibilities.”

The 96-year-old attended fewer public events in the weeks preceding her Jubilee festivities in early June due to mobility concerns, and she was compelled to skip a service commemorating her 70-year reign due to “some discomfort.”

Queen Elizabeth II, who was only 25 years old when she rose to the throne in 1952, the longest reign in British history belongs to her. She eclipsed the mark set in 2015 by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who ruled for 62 years.

She celebrated her Platinum Jubilee this year, making history’s second-longest-serving monarch, King Louis XIV of France, who ruled for 72 years and 110 days, the first.

According to reports, Prince Charles will succeed King Charles II, who ruled for 25 years from 1660 to 1685, and King Charles I, who ruled from 1625 to 1649. The Prince of Wales, whose full name is Charles Philip Arthur George, is free to take any other Christian name as his title.
