About the BECE Examination
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is a standardized test that serves as an academic evaluation of Primary and Junior High School education received by students. It is also used to assess students’ academic preparedness for Senior High School in Ghana and other African countries. The exam scores are used to determine a student’s placement in the next grade, therefore it’s crucial that they accurately reflect the student’s level of knowledge and understanding at that time.
It is taken by students completing their Junior High School (JHS) education in their 3rd year. The BECE is a standardized test used to evaluate and improve education different subjects such as Maths, English, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, BDT, ICT, French, and Ghanaian Language.
What does it mean to upgrade your results?
To upgrade your results, means a lot, however, to most Ghanaian students, upgrading means paying money to increase your grades (eg. Upgrading from Grade C-6 to A-1 in a subject like mathematics). Since it is a term which has lasted for a while, many have the believe that upgrading is possible.
Since the exam is a standardized one, it is intended to be a fair measure of the student’s learning and comprehension.
Is it possible to upgrade your BECE results?
No. It is not possible to upgrade your BECE results. After the exam is taken and graded, there is no way to modify the outcome.
Students may request a review or appeal of their BECE results under certain circumstances. This is common practice when a student has reason to doubt the accuracy of their grades or who felt they were treated unfairly during the exam time. The grade of a student may be raised if their request for a review is granted however, it is not usually successful.
Students should, therefore, put in as much time as possible before taking the BECE to ensure the greatest possible performance.
How To Upgrade (Improve) your BECE Results the right way
Although it is not possible to upgrade your results by just paying money or looking for connections, there are other ways to get good grades which are legal and legitimate.
1. Writing BECE again
It’s feasible and possible to rewrite the exams again after taking some time out from school.
Some private schools offer remedial programs or advanced classes which can allow students to take additional courses and examinations in order to improve their score on their BECE results.
Private schools are more likely to admit kids who did poorly on the BECE and are looking for a second opportunity. They take you in and help you get ready for the next challenge so you can conquer it successfully. Note that you could still fail again if you don’t put in the effort to study.
2. Applying for Remarking
It is possible to request a review of your exam results through the institution you completed if you feel they do not fairly reflect your abilities.
